Classic Swartland red blend, hence the name BLACK, as Swartland translated is “black-land”. A blend of mostly Syrah with some Carignan.
Black is a classic Swartland red. Multi-layered and complex. Medium bodied bright red to dark red fruit profile. This wine has the most components & layers built into it of all of my wines. Always elegant with silky tannins.
Soil: A blend of mostly decomposed Granite and Shale soils. Cépage: Mostly Syrah supported with Carignan.
A note from the wine maker .....“My wine making is done as naturally as possible using only the natural indigenous yeast from the vineyards in order for the wines to embrace their own identity of their origins, as I always say: "Address Speaks Louder". Multiple picking dates are carefully calculated to ensure that I have components that offer both freshness and acidity, as well as rich ripeness of fruit. This ensures that the best possible natural balance is achieved by blending these components, eliminating the need to artificially adjust the acidity by adding Tartaric acid etc.
A note about the vintage ..
2018 – The keyword for 2018 is balance. Post drought, the vines adapted and hence it was a smaller harvest.
harvest time did have its advantages as vines were healthy and the dry weather during ripening occurred very evenly which gave us loads of time to get all our grapes in without a major rush. The result was elegant and balanced wines, ready to be enjoyed (2020) yet with great ageing potential.
|Area / Country||Bottelary, Stellenbosch, South Africa|
|Tasting Notes||The Cabernet makes it a big, but refined wine. Naturally fermented and matured in French oak barrels for 18 months. This has all the big black fruits – blackcurrants, blackberries and plums. The Cinsault lifts the tannins and gives a juicy freshness and pepperiness on the finish.|
